From President Maurie

Justin North-Coombes gave us a good insight into his role as a Mica Paramedic. What an outstanding person he is and how fortunate are we to have the amazing front-line workers of Ambulance Victoria and our hospitals.

A reminder to send a photo to me as requested in the email I sent Friday Oct 1.

Grand Final FUNraiser
Grand Final FUNraiser

It was a nervous time for Demon supporters in the second quarter but, after that, the sentimental favourites surged ahead. But who were the skilful/lucky winners of our own footy competition? All will be revealed this Thursday when the WINNERS will be announced.
Many thanks to Rob Hortin for collating results from the seventy seven entries from RCNB Members and Friends. We hope all participants had FUN urging their nominations to victory.
Contactless Food Delivery
Our friends at Camcare put out a call for a driver to deliver fresh food and groceries to those clients unable to collect the goods themselves.

Our Club responded. So, each Thursday we deliver a large bag of goodies to grateful clients in Boroondara.

Driver Geoff’s only comment “Thank goodness for navigation systems that tell you where to go!”

World Coffee Day and the Research to Quality Coffee

The exact origin of an International Coffee Day celebration is unknown. In 1983 the All Japan Coffee Association promoted an event, and in China the International Coffee Organisation initiated an annual celebration in April 2001.  In the United States, 'National Coffee Day' was mentioned publicly as early as 2005. The name 'International Coffee Day' was called after a press conference on 3 October 2009 to celebrate it and to announce the first New Orleans Coffee Festival.

Various events have been held called Coffee Day or National Coffee Day, with many of these on or around September 29, but in Milan, as part of  Expo 2015, a decision was taken by the International Coffee Organization to launch the first official World Coffee Day on October 1st.

World coffee production is estimated at over 10 million tons in 2020-21, 2.2% lower than the previous  year while global consumption was estimated to rise by 0.3% .

Eastern Elder Abuse Network

The Eastern Elder Abuse Network (EEAN) is working with Swinburne University to create a media database of images, video and stories of diverse, active and positive older people.

The database will be used to combat the negative representations of older people we often see in the media. The EEAN members, which includes local councils, health and community services, will instead use these positive images in their media, information and awareness campaigns.

We are looking for community champions to make this happen!

If you are available from mid-October, a Swinburne student will visit you at your home (or in a public place if restrictions are in place) to photograph or film you. They may ask you questions about the activity you've chosen and why you enjoy it. Students will wear masks at all times. The whole process should take less than one hour.

Interested?  Email Diana Bossio dbossio@swin.edu.au to join the register.   She will be in touch to confirm a suitable day and time.

Action at Rimern

Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network

Despite the COVID lockdown RIMERN, as an ‘approved workplace’,  is clocking up around 45 volunteer hours per week, receiving, storing and distributing goods destined for needy recipients.

Rob Head was excited to explain that this picture shows some of their highly-skilled crew and their new goods lift.

There are now 13 member Clubs involved, 12 agencies signed up to receive goods for clients, and 300+ followers on their Facebook. Things are happening at RIMERN.

A reminder that the Yarra Park Playground has, yet  again, been pushed back and will now take place on November 21st (Covid permitting) and there will be a letterbox drop the weekend before to get the message out.

Here is a link to a short video about the project. It's in a Dropbox but you should be able to open it without downloading it to your Dropbox account (for those who have one).
